Ridgewood, NY
Ridgewood, Queens began as part of rural farmland and woodland used by the Lenape people before European settlement in the 17th century. Dutch and English settlers farmed the area for over a century, but it remained largely undeveloped until the late 1800s. The neighborhood’s name Ridgewood came into use in the 19th century, referring to its higher ridge of land, and it became part of New York City when the boroughs were consolidated in 1898.
Residential development exploded in the early 20th century (especially 1905–1915) with thousands of brick rowhouses built to house working-class families, particularly German and other Eastern European immigrants. Early populations were predominantly working-class Germans, Austrians, Italians, and other Europeans who established a close-knit, owner-occupied community.
Today, Ridgewood is a bustling, ethnically diverse neighborhood with a mix of Hispanic/Latino, White, Asian, and other communities, reflecting waves of immigration over the decades. According to the 2010 U.S. Census, the population was about 69,300 residents, with Hispanic/Latino and White communities making up large portions of the neighborhood.
